If you ask any canine they will probably tell you there is no such thing as bad dog food, but the reality is that many of the cheaper brands are not that good for them. Some of the lesser-known brands have been known to use ingredients that may not be the best for them, including beef from sick or dying cows as well as other animals that may not be in the best of health.

Additionally, not all dog food is created equal and it may not contain the vitamins and minerals dogs need for health, and animals at different stages of their growth need different supplements and even if made with healthy ingredients it may be bad dog food if it does not have what your dog needs. There are certain things the dog will need for its health, but there are also certain foods that are healthy for humans, but can be deadly for dogs.

There no worse feeling in the world for a pet owner to find out their faithful companion is suffering because they were fed contaminated dog food. Since the large pet food recall occurred people have started to look at buying or making natural dog food. In the pet food recall it was found that tainted ingredients imported from China were the cause of the illnesses and deaths of pets. People have been feeding their dogs Alpo dog food for years and have found it to be nutritious and well liked by their dogs. Recently Alpo dog food was involved in the pet food recall with one of the products. The canned food Alpo Prime Cuts in wet gravy had to be recalled due to the industry wide contamination of pet food products. Purina voluntarily recalled this product quickly and efficiently to prevent harm occurring to people’s pets. Pet owners were provided with the necessary information to check any food that they may have purchased to make sure it was safe to use. The recall was based on the fact that wheat gluten used in the production of dog food had been contaminated with the harmful substance melamine. Because of the rapid recall consumers can now feel confident that Alpo dog food is safe for each dog to eat.

On March 16, 2007 Menu Foods initiated the largest dog and cat food recall in history. It had been discovered through the death and illnesses of several pets that there was a problem with the pet foods on the market. Menu Foods is the manufacturer of most brands of dog and cat foods and uses the same basic ingredients for these products. It was found that wheat gluten in the pet foods was contaminated with a substance called melamine. Through several studies the Food and Drug Administration and Menu Foods found that melamine was causing the dog and cat illnesses and deaths.

With the recent pet food scare and health concerns for the pet food that is purchased in stores many people have decided that homemade pet food is a good idea. The recent pet food scare revealed that no matter how much money a person spends on their pet food all the pet foods come from the same manufacturers and if any of the food is poisoned in processing all of it will be poisoned. People value their pets highly, feeling like they are truly a part of the family and no one wants to be feeding their pet food that is possibly poisoned or even unhealthy.
